Zeppelin is very possibly one of the greatest bands
of all time. Using a combination of heavy metal
rock and British folk music, they broke all boundaries
known to traditional rock. They topped the charts
with songs such as Stairway to Heaven, Whole Lotta Love,
and Rock and Roll. These are only a few of their
most famous songs. In 1967 a group called the
Yardbirds split up and because of that a man by the
name of Jimmy Page was left to solve the problem of
tour dates that still needed to be met.
Lead guitarist Jimmy
Page and bassist Chirs Deja were left with the rights
of the band name. Something had to be done to
make the tour dates that were still set for the band.
Trying to find a lead singer for the band Page
went to hear Robert Plant, who at the time was singing
in another band called Hobbstweedle. Jimmy was
impressed with Plant’s voice and stage presence. In
1968 Plant became the New Yardbirds new lead singer.
For unknown reasons the bassist, Chris Deja, quit
and John Paul Jones replaced him as bassist. All
that was left to find was a drummer, and after a moth
of trying to convince John Bonham to join the band.
He did. While touring under the name the
New Yardbirds, the band members finished the old bands
concert schedule.
The band then formed
under a new name, Lead Zeppelin. The name was
chosen because of its irony and as a joke because a
Lead Zeppelin certainly could not float. They
later changed the spelling to Led Zeppelin so that it
wouldn’t be mispronounced. Newly named Led Zeppelin,
they went into the studio and recorded their first album,
Led Zeppelin, in less than 30 hours. By December
of 1968 they had signed a contract with Atlantic Records
and set out to tour the United States. In January
1969 Led Zeppelin the album came out and it didn’t
take long for it to jump to the top of the charts.
While touring non-stop
through the year, they recorded Led Zeppelin II. Just
as a the first album had, Led Zeppelin II hit number
one on the charts and stayed there for seven weeks.
After doing two albums of hard rock, the band
decided to step it down and get back to the British
folk music in the third album. This came out in
October of 1970. Led Zeppelin IV, better know
as Four Symbols, wasn’t released until a year later,
but it contained some of their most famous songs. It
is said that this album really captured the folk spirit
with songs like Stairway to Heaven, Rock and Roll, and
When the Levee Breaks. This album sold more than
16 million copies and became the bands biggest selling
album.
In 1973 they
released Houses of the Holy, which debuted at number
one in America and England. To help with their
recording they formed their own label, Swan Song. They
recorded their final three albums under this recorded
label. Their last three albums released were Physical
Graffiti, Presence, and In Through the Out Door. After
the release of In Through the Out Door, Led Zeppelin
toured Europe one last time.
On September 25
following the finish of their European tour. John
Bonham was found in his bed, dead, choked on his own
vomit after drinking all day. A few months later
the band decided that without Bonham, Led Zeppelin could
not continue, and broke up. I’ve listened to
Led Zeppelin for many years now, and I have to say they
will always be my favorite band because of their talent,
and their song style.
